This Optivision spirit level from Draper is not only a really good idea it comes at a price which would make it great value - even if it didn't have the unique feature of a dual viewing plumb vial. I was given a 600mm model for testing but, having used it for a few weeks, I am so convinced of its usefulness that I am going to add to my collection by buying the 4ft model.
The trick, if you haven't already sussed it, is simply that you don't have to place your cheek against the wall, cupboard, or window to plumb it up. You can stand square on and see the plumb vial projected by a mirror into a front viewing window. This, in effect, is how a single lens reflex camera works, and there is certainly no optical distortion from the reflected view. In fact, the vial is red, which is said to make it six times more readable, especially in low and bright light. If you work in halogen light, and suffer the washout effect that this has on your current level, then give the Optivision a go.
Having said that this is a low priced level may ring alarm bells in the heads of all those who have bought cheap models only to find that they lose their accuracy after the first knock. A level that is not longer level is worse than no level at all, but this is a tough little beast. Not only are the solid acrylic vials highly shock resistant they are also guaranteed for life. For good measure the reinforced profile and shock absorbent ends give further protection. The level also has a milled base which gives greater accuracy but, in my experience, a milled base is more of a nuisance than a benefit because it picks up every bit of crud around and is difficult to clean.
You only need one snot of mortar or adhesive on the base to throw you out of level and undo all that precision. Give me a smooth wipe clean base any day. That said, it is a very fine bit of milling rather than the deep furrows you normally get and, so far, it has remained clean. The milled base is not enough to put me off but if they did a version without I would prefer it.
VERDICT: I am so convinced of its usefulness that I am going to add to my collection by buying the 4ft model.
